Why Not Lion (Mac OS X 10.7)?

VelOCRaptor is currently a pragmatic mix of the Objective-C and Ruby programming languages. Ruby allows us to rapidly interface to the underlying OCR engine, and Objective-C makes the GUI.

Unfortunately the RubyCocoa framework that makes this possible is broken on Lion, and no fix is in the works. So I'm pretty hosed until I can find time to rewrite most of the program in something else.

Why Not Tiger (Mac OS X 10.4)?

VelOCRaptor is currently a pragmatic mix of the Objective-C and Ruby programming languages. Ruby allows us to rapidly interface to the underlying OCR engine, and Objective-C makes the GUI.

The Ruby framework we use is pre-installed on Leopard and Snow Leopard but not on Tiger. You can install Ruby on Tiger, but it would mean some combination of

  • Separate Leopard and Tiger versions
  • An installer for Tiger
  • A larger download for both platforms
  • Testing on both Tiger and Leopard before release
  • Maintaining hardware to test both Tiger and Leopard
  • Support headaches

So VelOCRaptor on Tiger (there's an image) wouldn't be impossible, but it's just too much work for too little reward. It would be nice if Apple supported new technologies on their old operating systems, but they don't, and the upside of that is the relative stability that we enjoy compared to Windows.

What Scan Resolution is Best?

The OCRopus engine inside VelOCRaptor is optimised for 300 DPI images. We plan to re-scale images below this resolution, but don't yet.

Why Does VelOCRaptor Work so Badly with Screen Captures?

The resolution of screen grabs is too low for VelOCRaptor. We plan to fix this (if this feature is important to you please vote for it) but in the meantime if you use your favourite image editor to resample the picture to 300 DPI very acceptable results can be obtained.

What is No-Click OCR?

If VelOCRaptor is not running, you can drag a scanned image file onto the application icon. VelOCRaptor will read the text, write the PDF file into the same folder as the image, and exit. This mode is ideal for integrating with other workflows, including scanner programs.

Does VelOCRaptor Support Multi-Page Files

VelOCRaptor will read from multi-page PDF files. If multi-page TIFF support is important to you, please vote for it.

How Can I Select Columns of Text in the Output?

VelOCRaptor will maintain the layout of multi-column documents, Mac PDF views (including VelOCRaptor's PDF view and Preview) select lines from both columns if you drag with the mouse. Holding down the Option (Alt) key as you drag allows you to select a rectangular region such as a single column.

Can I Have Plain Text Output?

The simplest way to get plain text is to select and copy text from the output window when VelOCRaptor has finished reading.

You can also talk to the command-line.

Does VelOCRaptor Do X?

Maybe ;-) To find out, the best way is to download it and see. If you still can't tell, then contact us.

Why Doesn't VelOCRaptor Do X?

Maybe we haven't thought of it, maybe we haven't had time yet, or maybe we just don't like X! If you have a suggestion, we'd love to hear from you.

That Name, Have You Noticed?

Yes, it's mis-spelled and it has CRap in the middle, but then so is and does our output sometimes. Opinions are divided on the name. Please let us know if you love it, or hate it.
